Kim Holleman, Emergence, 2016, laser-engraved hardwoods: sapele, red oak, cherry, walnut, poplar and 100+ year old reclaimed New York City water tower redwood, Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, Queens
Emergence is comprised of 600 12” hexagonal hardwood tiles that piece together to form an installation that spans across a blue wall. Forty of the 600 tiles have been laser engraved with artworks from the first graduating senior class and their teacher. These forty tiles are set within Hollerman’s larger image of a tree canopy with leaves blowing in the wind.
The artist chose the theme of emergence to echo the graduating class’ passage into the world at large. The student’s tiles are interspersed in an undulating form, floating across the canopy like leaves blowing from a tree and into the sky.
