Matthew Thurber, Mouse Maze, 2015, ceramic mosaic tile, PS 35 Addition, Queens
Mouse Maze is an interactive labyrinth located in the the new lobby of PS 35 Queens. Created from ceramic tiles using mosaic techniques, the Maze is populated with rodentine protagonists who react to their permanently lost status with various attitudes. Over 40 obstacles befuddle them, standing out from the maze in relief. These figures relate classical labyrinths (such as the one in Chartres Cathedral) to video games and Where's Waldo, updating the quest narrative with 21st century perils and modern day Minotaurs. At the center is a giant, metaphysical Question Mark. Mouse Maze invites the search for a solution, but also reflection on the mysteries at the heart of existence
