Anne Deleporte, Editorial Blue, 2013, newsprint, paint, Highbridge Environmental Education Campus, Bronx
Editorial Blue is a site-specific installation by artist Anne Deleporte for the lobby of The Highbridge Green School. This artwork was created using a process she developed and has used throughout her career. She begins by gathering local newspapers of all types and collecting pages she finds interesting and related in some way to the site or audience where she is working. Once enough images are amassed, she applies the newspaper pages to the surface of the artwork which is either directly on a wall or, as here, to a prepared panel.
Deleporte then paints over most of the surface by hand with her signature soft blue paint. She leaves exposed only select imagery such as art reproductions, photographs, sections of advertisements, and graphics from the newsprint. Against the sky-like blue field, the forms and images that remain pop out and seem to float within a dreamy, surreal, and celestial space. By isolating them in this way, they take on added significance and value.
For this work, Deleporte has thoughtfully highlighted a variety of elements relevant to a school environment and education, history, art, and pop culture, as well as witty and playful additions chosen specifically for the students. The connections and relationships between images are left purposefully ambiguous by the artist. Instead, she allows the viewers to make their own associations based on their personal experiences and memories triggered by the images to fill the empty spaces.
