Lawrence Weiner, One Way & Another, 2012, language + the materials referred to & stainless steel, Midtown East Campus, Manhattan
One Way & Another is a site-specific sculpture located in the lobby of the Midtown East Campus by artist Lawrence Weiner. A founding figure of the conceptual art movement, Weiner has been creating language-based sculptures since the 1960s. For this project, he has selected to install the piece within the lobby floor greeting each individual as they enter the school.
As is typical of his work, One Way & Another is cryptic, yet suggestive at the same time. Allusion is made to the commonly used phrase – one way or another, but here takes on different spin with the replacement of “or” with “and”. Arranged in a whimsical, sweeping manner, the phrase is further trumped by the center focus word below - “cusped” - from which curved lines extend as if they are bursting outward. The piece is purposefully left open for translation, allowing imagination to connect words and find meanings. It is meant to trigger all types of interpretations, encouraging each viewer to form their own relationship with the work and its content.
