Erik den Breejen, Peach Pimento Pizza Plum, Peanut Pumpkin Bubblegum, 2018, acrylic on panels, PS 24 Addition, Queens
Peach Pimento Pizza Plum, Peanut Pumpkin Bubblegum is a painted mural in the cafeteria of PS 24 Addition in Queens. It measures twelve feet high by thirty feet across and features excerpts from fourteen poems by fourteen different poets. Included are poems by authors such as William Blake, Christina Rossetti, Langston Hughes, Judith Viorst and Shel Silverstein. The themes range from playful and humorous to more serious moods. The viewer can either read the poems in the order in which they originally appeared, from left to right, or they could read the words in a more visual manner, moving up and down as they choose, creating new combinations of words and phrases.
A specific pattern determines the color of the words and the background. The words alternate between shades of blue and orange, growing in size and saturation as they approach the center. The background starts at the top as a deep magenta and slowly transforms to a light blue at the bottom. These shifts in color create over 50 different color combinations between the words and their backgrounds.
The artwork is entirely hand-painted and hopes to bring joy, play and wonder to the students of the school.
