Daniel Bejar, A History of US, 2022, lenticular print on panels behind glass, Academy of American Studies, Queens
A History of US is a site-specific artwork created by Daniel Bejar for the lobby of the new Academy of American Studies, Queens. The mural utilizes the concept of a historical timeline brought to life through five lenticular panels. The panels display historical imagery that illuminate significant moments in American and New York City history. The lenticular print technology used to create the piece allows for two images to be viewed simultaneously. The main image viewers see while standing in front of the artwork is an early iteration of the American flag, featuring thirteen stars and stripes representing the colonies that fought for their independence in the American Revolutionary War. As a viewer changes their viewpoint, a second image appears within the individual panels. They are arranged chronologically from left to right and include a selection of archived documents from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
Incorporating the long tradition of American time capsules started in 1795 by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, Bejar also created a time capsule for the new school. Objects were collected from students that provide a glimpse into their lives and current world realities. Artifacts from the school referencing its unique history are also included. The time capsule is to be opened in 2072.
